Comfort
is a remote starter
You've heard of raffles for which "you need not be present"
to win. But did you know that same phrase could apply to starting your
car?
A remote engine starter allows you to start your car at the press of
a button from hundreds of feet away.
Many people buy remote starters so they can start their vehicle from
the warmth of their kitchens on icy mornings and give engines and heaters
a few minutes to start warming the interior before they venture out of
the house.
Or imagine leaving your office or shop on a hot and humid afternoon and
having your car's interior already cooling down by the time you reach
the driver's seat.
Remote engine starters are available as add-on accessories from a number
of manufacturers.
They can be installed in cars powered by gasoline or diesel engines and
equipped with automatic or manual transmissions.
Some starters can be programmed to shut off the engine after a period
of time, 10 or 15 minutes, for example. Some can be set to start a vehicle
every two or three hours so the radiator won't freeze on extremely cold
nights.
G.I.T. Security Products of Montreal started making programmable remote
starters more than a dozen years ago as an alternative for people who
plug their vehicles into electrical outlets overnight in Canada's extremely
cold winters, said company manager Danny Lewin.
In addition to its accessory line of starters, G.I.T. remote starters
are an original equipment option on Subarus sold in Canada.
G.I.T. and other companies make remote starters priced between $125 and
$175, including installation. More expensive units feature two-way transceivers
that verify that the car is running and the doors are locked.
